Chairs

Chairs you are glad to see every day — and glad to sit in

A chair is not a side note. At the dining table you spend your mornings, your evenings, your meals, your conversations. The wrong chair makes itself felt quickly — too hard, too high, too wobbly, or simply wrong for the table. The right chair, on the other hand, pleasantly fades into the background and lets what really matters happen: good food, good company.

Our collection includes dining chairs in various materials, shapes, and styles — from upholstered chairs with armrests to slender wooden chairs and modern shell chairs. Curated for Swiss living, delivered directly to your door.

Which chair suits your dining table?

The most important question first: what does the chair need to go with? This is not just a matter of taste — it is also a question of dimensions.

Seat height and table top. There should be approximately 25–30 cm of clearance between the seat surface and the underside of the table top — that is the guideline for relaxed sitting without feeling cramped. Anyone with a dining table that has a thick apron should check this more rather than less carefully.

Style: contrasting or harmonious? Shell chairs in plastic can work surprisingly well alongside a solid wood table. Upholstered chairs with a velvet cover turn a plain table into an invitation. Not all chairs need to be identical — mixing styles is a deliberate design choice today.

Space per chair. The rule of thumb is: at least 60 cm of width per seat. If people have to squeeze together, it is better that they choose to do so rather than being forced to.

Our tables collection helps you think of chairs and tables as a single unit — with coordinated dimensions and design languages.

Materials: what you should know about wood, upholstery, and shells

Wooden chairs are robust, timeless, and develop character over the years. Solid wood wears differently from veneered versions — it shows signs of use, but also dignity. An honest choice for families with children.

Upholstered dining chairs make sitting noticeably more comfortable during long meals. The cover determines how much care is needed: leather and faux leather can be wiped clean easily, fabric is warmer and softer — but requires a little more attention. Anyone with young children or pets should factor this in.

Shell chairs are usually light, stackable, and clean in form. They suit modern interiors well and are often more space-efficient than upholstered options. Plastic shells can be surprisingly comfortable — provided the ergonomics are right.

Designer chairs often come in iconic form: a curved shell, an unexpected material, a line that stays with you. They make a deliberate statement in the room — and are sometimes more comfortable than they look.

Try before you buy — why this matters especially with chairs

You test a sofa after 20 minutes of lying on it. With chairs it is quicker — but it remains important. What looks symmetrical and inviting in a photo can sometimes feel quite different in reality: a seat that is too shallow, a backrest that is too steep, not enough support under the thighs.

In the Showroom in Winterthur you can experience a selection of our chairs in person — sit down, stay a moment, judge them alongside the table. It is not essential, but it helps. Anyone who has ever returned a chair will know why.

Thinking chairs as part of an ensemble

A chair rarely stands alone. For a coherent interior, it is worth viewing the entire dining room as a unit — table, chairs, lighting, mix of materials.

If you would like to extend your outdoor space, our garden chairs offer a curated selection for balconies and terraces — with the same standards of quality and design.

For a full overview of the entire dining room range, our Tables & Chairs category covers everything from the first idea to the finished setting.

Frequently asked questions when buying chairs

How many chairs fit around my dining table?

It depends on the size of the table. A table 160 cm long comfortably seats four to six chairs — depending on the width of the chairs and comfort requirements. Important: room size also plays a role, so that chairs can be pulled out and pushed back in comfortably.

Can I mix different chair models?

Yes — and it often looks more considered than a matching set. The recommendation: connect them through one shared element, for example the material of the legs or a colour.

What is the difference between a shell chair and an upholstered chair?

Shell chairs have a shaped, hard seat shell made of plastic, wood, or metal. Upholstered chairs have a padded seat and/or backrest. Upholstered chairs are generally more comfortable for long periods of sitting; shell chairs are easier to clean and often more space-efficient.
