Buying the right mattress: construction, firmness and size at a glance
You do not buy a mattress every month — at best it accompanies you for ten years and influences every day how rested you wake up. That is why it is worth understanding before you buy what lies behind the different constructions and which mattress suits your sleeping position, your weight and your preferences. At livevibe.ch you will find high-quality mattresses in various versions — to order online or to try in person at our showroom in Winterthur.
Pocket spring, cold foam or boxspring — which construction suits you?
Three constructions dominate the Swiss market:
Pocket spring mattress: Each spring is individually encased and responds independently to pressure. This reduces the transfer of movement to a sleeping partner and provides precise support. Pocket spring mattresses are breathable and particularly suited to people who sleep warm.
Cold foam mattress: Cold foam adapts to the body without retaining heat — unlike memory foam. A cold foam mattress with a 7-zone construction supports the shoulder, waist, pelvis and legs differently according to pressure requirements. This makes it the preferred choice for side and back sleepers.
Boxspring mattress: Boxspring systems consist of a base unit with an integrated spring core on top of which the actual mattress rests. The result: a soft, hotel-like sleeping feel with plenty of depth. Boxspring mattresses are firmly combined with their frame — they are particularly suited to people who prefer a comfort-focused, lightly sprung bed.
Not sure which construction suits you? At the showroom in Winterthur you can try all options in person — without pressure, with proper advice.
What do firmness ratings mean — and which is right for you?
Mattresses are classified by firmness ratings that indicate how much the surface yields. Common ratings run from H1 (very soft) to H5 (very firm). The choice depends on two factors: body weight and sleeping position.
- Lighter people (under 60 kg) are more comfortable on softer ratings (H1–H2) because the body exerts less pressure.
- Medium weight (60–100 kg) is well served by H2–H3 — this is the most common range in the Swiss market.
- Heavier people (over 100 kg) need H4–H5 so that the spine does not sag.
- Side sleepers benefit from a softer shoulder zone; back sleepers from medium-firm, even support.
A 180×200 cm mattress — the most popular double-bed size in Switzerland — is available from us in various firmness ratings. Also take a look at our range of Beds & Mattresses if you want to match the frame and mattress to each other.
What makes a good mattress — what to look out for when buying
A good mattress meets three basic conditions: it keeps the spine in a neutral position, it is breathable enough to prevent heat and moisture build-up, and it is durable enough to maintain its comfort over the years. Checklist for buying:
- Try it out: No mattress test replaces actually lying on it. Try it for at least 10–15 minutes in your preferred sleeping position.
- Size: For single beds, 90×200 and 100×200 are standard. For double beds, 160×200 is the minimum — 180×200 is the preferred comfort size in Switzerland.
- Cover: Removable and washable covers are a must for allergy sufferers.
- Combination with a slatted base: The mattress alone is not enough — check whether your existing slatted base is compatible with the construction and firmness rating.
At our showroom in Winterthur we take the time to help you properly. Bring along your height and weight if possible — that way we can narrow down the recommendation right from the start.
Order online or try it at the showroom?
Both are possible at livevibe.ch. Those who already know the mattress or have a clear idea can order conveniently online. Those who are not yet sure — which construction, which firmness rating, which size — are best off visiting the showroom in Winterthur first. All models are there, and you decide based on the actual feel rather than product descriptions alone.
